Logistics Manager

SUMMARY

Our client, a manufacturer of Chemicals and Fertilizer is seeking their Manager of Logistics. He/she will schedule raw materials for production use. Schedule and ship all fertilizer and chemicals from the plant via rail car, barge, or vessel. Coordinate with, and oversee, the Docks/Shipping Superintendent to safety and efficiently complete the load schedule. Manage our growing fleet of assets including barges and railcar to include compliance inspections, and routine and corrective maintenance. Effectively stand in as vacation relief for the Traffic Coordinator including billing out cars and trucks, building rail paths and completing Stock Reports.



ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

Coordinate with all departments including Sales, Operations and Maintenance to ensure shipments are completed in a safe and efficient manner.

Coordinate with Raw Material Manager and multiple suppliers to ensure feed-stock inventory is adequate for plant operations.

Maintain reports to forecast production and feed-stock requirements that require proficient use of Microsoft Office.

Work with the Accounting Department to manage the Stock Report which is our official document of production and inventories.

Schedule and track rail-car repairs with Mobile Repair Units and outside shops.

Schedule and ship barges and vessels while de-conflicting maintenance and operations activities. This will require a working understanding of maintenance and operations.

Minimize demur-rage costs by coordinating with the Sales Department and Shipping to prioritize rail-car orders and shipments while considering operational and maintenance restrictions.

Assist with investigating customer complaints.

Oversee the Shipping Department to ensure safety and procedural compliance while meeting the delivery deadlines of the company and communicate department status to the Operations Manager.

Write/Review/Rewrite Shipping procedures to ensure compliance and the safest possible work environment/practices.

Provide miscellaneous office support for Operations Manager.

Have/develop working knowledge of shipping and accounting programs (Rail Connect, MSNAV, Microsoft Office) to effectively provide vacation relief to the Traffic Coordinator.

A thorough understanding of DOT, OSHA, and Coast Guard regulations with respect to shipping to ensure continuous compliance.

Other duties as assigned.



SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Direct supervisor for the Traffic Coordinator. Oversee Shipping Superintendent and 25+ union operators in the Shipping/Docks area.



EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

Bachelors degree (BA) from four-year college or university; or one to two years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

A minimum of 5 years of logistics experience.

A minimum of 3 years of supervisory experience.

A working understanding of Operations is preferred.



LANGUAGE/COMMUNICATION SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers and general public.

Must be proficient in Microsoft Office.



MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.



REASONING ABILITY

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.



WORK ENVIRONMENT

A mix of General work office environment (60%) and plant environment (40%). Plant environment is due to supervising the Shipping/Docks Department.
